The Cult of the Market

The formula ‘Market = God’, which is patently false, can with some conceptual contortions be made plausible. For example, one may interpret the market as an idol or false god, to be worshipped by those who value money or prosperity above all else. So, instead of worshiping a golden calf, which represented the fertility god Baal, modern men worship gold itself in its monetary forms. Some actually collect gold itself in the form of gold coins. The Market of the original equation then represents all the forms of wealth that humans covet. Such people devote their lives to the accumulation of vast fortunes that they will never live long enough to spend. In our age of vast income inequality, the .1 % are those multi-billionaires who have made the acquisition of wealth their primary purpose in life. For such, the market might as well be considered their god.
