Religion Not a Panacea

Religion cannot tackle all the world’s problems. Just think about important issues such as the human need to respond to emerging health issues like the ebola virus. That is a task for medical science. In various parts of the world, religious elements can hinder progress in dealing with health issues. Consider the Taliban’s opposition to providing people with polio vaccinations. Similarly, religious opposition to various birth control practices is a serious hindrance to dealing with world over-population. Religious opposition to educating women is a huge problem in various parts of the world. If indeed fifty-seven percent of Americans say that religion can answer all or most of today’s problems, that simply establishes that fifty-seven percent of Americans are either ignorant or not reporting truthfully. However to the extent that religious leaders like Pope Francis exert a moral influence upon politicians, religion can indeed exert a positive influence in some areas.
