Parsing Pornography

There can be no doubt whatsoever that some classes of sexually explicit material are immoral, pernicious and always will be illegal. This includes but is not confined to the abuses engaged in by pedophiles. On the other hand, the activities of consenting adults who are willing to be photographed and furthermore willing to have their activities viewed by others, seems to me to be no ones business but their own. Such a libertarian position is admitted absolutely abhorrent to various religious groups. But there is no surprise in that. There have always been people who thought they had a right to control what could occur in the privacy of other people’s homes and bedrooms. That the Kama Sutra or James Joyce’s Ulysses should ever have been banned as illegal because they were pornographic is just a sample of the ignorance of the past that has thankfully been overcome.
