Not God’s Doing

Who is responsible for the color of your eyes? One thing is certain: your eye color is not something you selected. Each parent contributed half of your genetic inheritance, and that genetic combination determined your eye color. Does it make sense to thank God for your eye color? Most certainly not. What about sexual orientation? That was not God’s doing either, although probably not as obvious totally genetically determined as one’s eye color. A deist like Aristotle, Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin believes God created the world, establishing the physical laws, and that set everything else in motion. If this is right and if universal determinism is correct, then God would be ultimately responsible for everything, including eye color and sexual orientation. But most people do not believe in universal determinism, and most think they are at least responsible for their own actions including sexual behavior, if not orientation.
