Joyful Engagement

What gives one joy is a very personal matter. Honestly I can report that the items on the Dharamsala list which provide this writer with something approaching joy, are humor and perspective. This writer is a senior who could have drifted into professional retirement years ago, but who has no desire whatsoever to leave my activities as a teacher of philosophy. Humor is important to me. I have for a lifetime begun every class I teach with humor. The other item which resonates with me is “perspective”, which I interpret to be the perpetual attempts to understand the great philosophical issues of the ages. What gives me considerable joy is the endeavor to teach young minds the delight of developing an intellectual thesis and of defending it again serious challenges. One of the great mysteries of life is why anyone would ever want to retire from such a joyful activity.
