Is God Listening?

America is often called a theist country. The very money of the country includes the motto “In God We Trust”. Interestingly this motto was not introduced by the Founding Fathers of the country, but rather was added at the time of The Civil War. The Founding Fathers were almost exclusively deists, not theists. As deists they would not have expected any divine protection, precisely because they did not believe God paid attention to human affairs. Benjamin Franklin, for example was a deist and not a Christian. He did not attend worship services, and certainly did not pray to God precisely because he would not have believed God was listening. Theists, however, do pray with the hope that God is prepared to intervene in human affairs. If it is true that reminders of God make people more likely to take risks, that strikes me as behavior which has little supporting evidence.
