Elusive Truth

The pursuit of truth in matters of religion is extraordinarily difficult. My truth consists in keeping an open mind on religious issues & weighing all arguments and assessing all evidence to the best of my ability. Traditional religious doctrines are for the most part patchworks of claims and assertions that were the products of centuries of oral traditions. Take for example the story of Noah’s flood in the Book of Genesis. Religious scholars know that it is a retelling of a much earlier flood story found in The Epic of Gilgamesh, in which the god Enlil caused the flood because human were being too noisy. Nevertheless many fundamentalists are certain that the story represents an inviolable historical truth. Philosophy and theology are full of arguments for both the existence and the nonexistence of God and gods. Anyone who thinks truth in these matter is easy knows not whereof he speaks.
