Divine Dress Codes

The Bible’s Old Testament does have religious rules concerning dress. Specifically, Deuteronomy 22:11 gives the rule: “Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together.” No one today knows what motivated that rule. All the biblical authors were priests, & all the priests were males. According to Genesis (Chapter 3, v.7), the creation of clothing was a human invention by Adam and Eve, after they ate from the tree of knowledge. The implications of this story are that God created human beings and was content for them to spend their days in Eden naked. What follows from this concerning religious rules about how one should be dressed is that they are priestly creations. Any religious rules that have therefore been created for how women should dress have been male inventions. And of course religious rules concerning dress, just as those concerning slavery, are not eternal and unchanging.
