Avoid the Doctrinaire

There are many people who believe that religious texts like The Bible are the eternal and unchanging statements of God’s Law. Anyone who believes that “God’s word should get highest priority and commands of the scripture should be rigidly implemented” has a serious case of spiritual myopia. For example “Leviticus” 25:44 states that we may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. This suggests that US citizens could possess slaves, so long as they are either Mexicans or Canadians. “Exodus” 21:7 sanctions selling’s one’s daughter into slavery. Or again, “Exodus” 35:2 insists that anyone working on the Sabbath should be put to death. Obviously these former divine commandments are no longer taken seriously (except by ISIS, which has recently reinstituted slavery for those considered heretics). That moral conceptions are still evolving is therefore obvious, and should caution us against putting our trust in “doctrines”.
