A Mistaken Assumption

Today’s question is should one study other religions or denominations? The answer is it depends. If one has a lively interest in what is occurring in the world around you then studying the religious traditions of the world is surely a worthwhile activity. But built into the original question is an assumption that I think is mistaken. Most of the billions of people who belong to the various religions of the world never chose to adopt their religion. It simply doesn’t work that way. Most people belong to the religion they were raised in. The point here is a point about the vast majority of the religious people of the world. There are exceptions. An individual marrying an individual of another religion may make a conscious choice to join the spouse’s religion. In such a case it would surely be prudent to study the proposed religion/denomination first to avoid surprises.
